Single Character from Indian Language Crashes Multiple Apps in Apple

Security researchers discovered a new dangerous text bomb which can crash multiple applications in iOS and macOS Apple devices.

A single character from Indian language Telugu can crash and block access to apps such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook Messenger, Outlook for iOS, and Gmail.

The bug was first spotted by Italian Blog Mobile World and can be easily exploited by just sending a message which contains that character to the recipients.

The app which received the message containing that character will crash in an infinite loop.

The only way to fix this issue is by asking someone to send a new message to that app and deleting the entire conversation containing that single character.

“When iOS, MacOS, watchOS try to render Indian symbol ‘‘ all of it has crashed Steps to Reproduce: Try to insert ‘‘ this symbol in any system text renderer like TextField, Label, TextView it always has crashed.”

The bug affects almost all Apple products such as iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple watch and  TV devices.

Apple was informed about that issue and fixes are expected to be out on the Apple update later this month.

According to reports Skype and telegram are unaffected by the bug.
